Best of the Best has arrived on Netflix on September 18, 2026, bringing a college comedy centered on friendship, dance and competition. The film follows childhood best friends Maya and Anjali after they join UCLA's competitive Bollywood-fusion dance team and discover that reaching the U.S. championship is more chaotic than expected.
The film stars Maitreyi Ramakrishnan and Priyanka Kedia as the two friends, with Ankur Rathee, Janina Gavankar, Chaneil Kular and Hasan Minhaj among the supporting cast. Netflix lists the movie at 1 hour and 52 minutes and gives it a PG-13 classification.
The basic story
Maya and Anjali enter a world where friendship and ambition are suddenly in competition. The dance team is not simply a casual college club; the characters are trying to build a performance strong enough to compete at the national level. That creates the familiar tension of a sports or performance movie while giving it a distinct cultural setting.
Netflix describes the film as a story about two best friends joining a competitive Bollywood-fusion team. The setup gives the movie room to mix rehearsal pressure, college life, friendship problems and large performance sequences. It also places South Asian-American cultural identity at the center rather than treating it as background decoration.
What makes the movie different?
The obvious visual hook is the dance. Director Lena Khan has described a style influenced by music-video aesthetics, fashion photography and the visual energy of films such as Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. That suggests the dance sequences are intended to carry a large part of the movie's personality rather than functioning only as transitions between dialogue scenes.
Hasan Minhaj also appears in the film and is credited as one of its writers alongside Prashanth Venkataramanujam. Netflix's behind-the-scenes material describes the project as a coming-of-age comedy built around sisterhood, friendship and self-acceptance.
The Netflix release
Because Best of the Best is a Netflix original, the September 18 launch puts the film in front of a global streaming audience at the same time. Netflix's September lineup also includes other new movies and series, making the weekend a busy period for viewers deciding what to watch next.
The movie is also arriving at a useful moment for audiences looking for lighter entertainment. Its premise combines competition and comedy, but the friendship between the leads remains the emotional center. That gives the story a familiar structure while its Bollywood-fusion setting gives it a different visual identity.
What viewers can expect
Expect a college setting, dance rehearsals, competitive rivalries and a friendship that has to survive the pressure of winning. The film is less about a mysterious high-concept plot and more about the chemistry between its two leads and the spectacle of the performances.
Best of the Best is now streaming on Netflix. Whether it becomes a repeat-watch favorite will depend on how audiences respond to its mix of familiar coming-of-age comedy, cultural specificity and high-energy dance sequences. For now, the important update is that the film has officially joined Netflix's September 2026 lineup.
