NASA's SpaceX Crew-13 Enters Final Preparation for Early October ISS Mission

NASA's SpaceX Crew-13 mission is moving through its final prelaunch preparations, with astronauts entering quarantine ahead of a planned launch to the International Space Station in early October 2026. NASA says the crew entered quarantine September 17 at Johnson Space Center as teams continued processing the mission.

The Crew-13 mission is part of NASA's continuing Commercial Crew program, which uses SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon spacecraft to rotate astronauts between Earth and the International Space Station. The upcoming flight follows Crew-12 and is part of the regular transportation cycle supporting Expedition 75.

Why quarantine happens before launch

Prelaunch quarantine is a routine part of human spaceflight preparation. Astronauts are isolated from outside exposure during the final days before launch to reduce the chance that an illness could affect the mission or the rest of the station crew after arrival.

NASA's September 17 update said the astronauts entered quarantine late Thursday and that launch operations were continuing toward an early-October target. The agency is also coordinating spacecraft processing, crew training and station preparations in parallel.

What Crew-13 will do at the ISS

Once in orbit, the Crew-13 astronauts will join the Expedition 75 team and take part in the station's research, maintenance and daily operations. The International Space Station remains a long-duration laboratory where crews conduct investigations that cannot easily be performed on Earth.

Current station operations include human-health research, Earth observation and technology demonstrations. NASA's September 21 station update said Expedition 75 crew members were working on biology measurements, exercise monitoring and breath-rate recording while also preparing for a crew swap.

The larger ISS transportation system

Crew-13 is one flight inside a much larger logistics network. NASA has also awarded SpaceX three additional crew missions, extending the commercial crew contract with Crew-15, Crew-16 and Crew-17.

Regular crew transportation keeps the station staffed while NASA and its international partners continue preparing for future human missions beyond low Earth orbit. The reliability of these routine flights is especially important because the ISS depends on regular crew rotations, cargo deliveries and maintenance operations.

What comes next

The immediate milestone is launch readiness. Teams will continue final spacecraft checks, astronaut preparation and weather assessment before the early-October target. As with any spaceflight schedule, the launch date can change if technical or weather conditions require a delay.

For space enthusiasts, Crew-13 is worth watching because it represents the next step in the steady rhythm of commercial human spaceflight to the ISS. NASA's latest updates show the mission is now in the final stretch before its planned October launch window.
