JLR plans to bring the electric Range Rover and Range Rover Sport to India as completely built imports initially, with a possible local-assembly decision after it gauges demand.

Jaguar Land Rover plans to bring the electric versions of the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport to India in the second half of 2027. The company expects to begin with completely built unit (CBU) imports rather than local assembly, according to comments reported by Autocar India on October 21, 2026.

The approach differs from the current internal-combustion Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, which are locally assembled in India. JLR’s global Range Rover managing director Martin Limpert told Autocar India that the company intends to test the market response first and then evaluate whether local assembly makes sense.

Why start with full imports?

Launching a new electric luxury SUV as a CBU allows a manufacturer to test demand without immediately committing to a dedicated local production plan. It can also mean a more limited initial supply and a higher landed cost than a locally assembled vehicle. JLR has not announced India pricing, variant details or a booking date for the two electric models.

The company’s decision is not a permanent rejection of local production. Limpert said the brand would assess customer response before deciding whether to assemble the electric SUVs in India at a later stage. That leaves room for a change in strategy if volumes and economics support it.

What buyers should watch

For customers considering a high-end electric SUV, the important details will be the final battery and motor specifications, claimed range, charging capability, warranty, service support and the pricing of each model. Those details will need to come from JLR’s India launch announcement, rather than being inferred from overseas specifications.

The planned second-half 2027 arrival is a broad timing indication, not an exact launch date. Until JLR publishes a full India specification sheet, buyers should treat price and delivery estimates circulating online as unconfirmed.

What it means for the luxury EV market

Adding electric versions of two established luxury nameplates would expand the premium EV choice in India, but the initial CBU route suggests JLR wants to measure the market before committing to local manufacturing. The next milestone will be a firm launch schedule and details of the India-spec models.

Insight Forge takeaway: JLR plans to bring the electric Range Rover and Range Rover Sport to India as completely built imports initially, with a possible local-assembly decision after it gauges demand.
