MediaTek has announced the Dimensity 9600 Pro, a new flagship smartphone processor that moves its Dimensity line to a 2nm process. Announced on September 15, 2026, the chip is positioned around four major areas: on-device AI, performance efficiency, gaming and computational photography.

The move to 2nm is the headline change. Smaller semiconductor processes can allow chip designers to pack more capability into a given area and improve efficiency, although the real-world result depends on the design of the complete phone. MediaTek says the new processor delivers a major efficiency improvement compared with its previous flagship generation.

AI moves further onto the phone

MediaTek is emphasizing agentic AI and on-device generative AI. The goal is to handle more AI workloads locally rather than sending every task to a remote server. Local processing can reduce dependence on network access and can make certain features feel more immediate, while also creating new demands for sustained performance and power management.

The company says the Dimensity 9600 Pro delivers a 51% performance boost for on-device generative AI tasks compared with its predecessor. MediaTek also says multi-core power consumption can fall significantly, reporting a 61% reduction in its own comparison measurements.

Gaming and graphics

Gaming is another major part of the new platform. A flagship chip must balance CPU performance, graphics processing and sustained power consumption because modern games can keep a phone under heavy load for long periods. MediaTek is positioning the Dimensity 9600 Pro as a platform for higher-end gaming as well as everyday smartphone workloads.

The same silicon is also intended to handle computational photography. Modern smartphone cameras rely heavily on processors to combine multiple exposures, reduce noise, process HDR scenes and improve image quality. A more capable AI and imaging pipeline can therefore affect the camera experience even when the physical camera hardware has not changed.

What about the wider Dimensity range?

MediaTek also introduced the Dimensity 9600M alongside the Pro model. It uses a 3nm process and is aimed at a broader high-end segment. That creates a two-tier strategy: a 2nm flagship platform for devices at the very top of the market and a 3nm model for other premium phones.

When will phones use it?

The processor is expected to appear in upcoming premium smartphones. MediaTek's announcement places the 9600 Pro inside a broader push to make advanced AI capabilities and higher efficiency part of the flagship Android experience.

For consumers, the interesting question will ultimately be less about the process number itself and more about what manufacturers do with it. A more efficient chip can be paired with a larger battery, a brighter display or more demanding AI features, while better sustained performance can help gaming and camera processing. Those choices will vary from phone to phone.

The Dimensity 9600 Pro therefore marks an important step in mobile silicon: the next generation of flagship phones is being designed around AI and efficiency as much as raw benchmark performance. The first devices using the chip will show how much of MediaTek's promised capability reaches real-world smartphones.
