Pa. Ranjith has announced a January 2027 Pongal release window for Vettuvam, his action drama starring Arya, Sobhita Dhulipala and an ensemble cast.
Pa. Ranjith’s long-in-development film Vettuvam has secured a theatrical release window for Pongal 2027. The director announced the January window on October 30, 2026, and the update was reported by The New Indian Express on October 31. The makers have not yet confirmed an exact day within the festival period.
Vettuvam was first announced at the Cannes Film Festival in 2022. Ranjith has written and directed the project, with production handled by Neelam Productions alongside Learn and Teach Production. The film is set in an apocalyptic environment where different factions compete for power.
A distinct action setting
The makers have highlighted the use of Adimurai and Mallakhamb martial-art forms in the film. Those disciplines give the action a specific physical vocabulary and set the project apart from a conventional contemporary crime thriller. The setting and faction-based conflict also suggest a world-building element, although the full plot has not yet been detailed publicly.
Cast and crew
The film’s leading cast includes Arya, Sobhita Dhulipala, VR Dinesh, Shabeer Kallarakkal and Kalaiyarasan, alongside a sizeable supporting ensemble. GV Prakash Kumar is composing the music. Other key crew members include cinematographer Rupesh Shaji, editor Selva RK, art director SS Moorthy and stunt choreographer Dhilip Subbarayan.
What the Pongal window means
Pongal is a major theatrical period for Tamil cinema, so a confirmed January 2027 window places Vettuvam in a competitive festive release corridor. It is still too early to infer its exact opening date, language-wise rollout, runtime or final marketing schedule. Those details will need separate confirmation from the producers.
The important update is that the film now has a public release window after several years of development. The next milestone is likely to be a more specific date and a fuller look at the film’s world through official promotional material.
