September 2026 Movie Week: Endgame Encore, Toy Story 5 and the New Streaming Era

September 2026 is turning into an interesting month for movie fans because theatrical re-releases and fast-moving streaming releases are happening side by side. A familiar blockbuster has returned to cinemas, while a major Pixar sequel has moved to Disney+. At the same time, new and recent films are continuing to spread across Netflix, HBO Max, Prime Video, Hulu, Peacock and other services.

Endgame Encore brings the theater event back

Marvel Studios released Avengers: Endgame Encore in cinemas on September 25, giving audiences another chance to see the 2019 finale on the big screen. The new version includes additional material and was positioned as a bridge toward Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled for December 18, 2026.

The re-release is also a reminder that a movie can have a second theatrical life years after its original run. According to the Associated Press, Endgame Encore earned about $26 million domestically and $60 million internationally during its re-release weekend. The result put the film back at the top of the weekend box office conversation and showed how strongly an established franchise can pull audiences back into cinemas.

Why it is unusual: Endgame is not being sold simply as an old favorite. The Encore edition adds fresh content, giving returning viewers a reason to treat the screening as a new piece of the larger MCU experience.

Toy Story 5 takes the opposite route

While Endgame Encore is asking audiences to return to theaters, Toy Story 5 is doing the reverse. Disney and Pixar's latest sequel started streaming exclusively on Disney+ on September 23, 2026. The film brings back Woody, Buzz Lightyear and Jessie while introducing a new generation of toys and a story built around the arrival of new technology in Bonnie's home.

Disney says the Toy Story franchise has accumulated more than two billion hours of viewing on Disney+, making it one of the service's major recurring properties. Moving Toy Story 5 to streaming therefore puts a recognizable franchise directly in front of subscribers who may have missed the theatrical window or simply prefer watching at home.

Streaming is getting crowded

The wider September movie lineup makes one thing obvious: there is no single “movie night” destination anymore. Recent titles are distributed across numerous services, and the same month's most talked-about films can have completely different release paths.

Current streaming roundups include releases such as UNABOMBER on Netflix and Toy Story 5 on Disney+, while other new or recent films are arriving through HBO Max, Prime Video, Hulu, Peacock and video-on-demand storefronts. That variety can be useful for viewers, but it also means discovering what to watch requires more searching than it did in the early days of streaming.

What this says about theatrical releases

Endgame Encore and Toy Story 5 show two different ways studios can use established franchises. A theatrical re-release can turn nostalgia into a social event, especially when new footage is attached. A streaming release can extend a film's reach quickly by putting it inside an existing subscription library.

Neither approach exists in isolation. A film can begin in theaters, move to premium digital rental, arrive on a subscription service and continue to appear in franchise collections for years. The window between those steps has also become a major part of how audiences plan their viewing.

Franchises are the common thread

Another pattern is the value of recognizable names. Endgame belongs to the MCU; Toy Story 5 is the latest entry in a long-running Pixar franchise. Recent streaming lists also contain major properties including Avatar, Zootopia, The Mandalorian, Mortal Kombat and Supergirl.

That does not mean audiences only want sequels and familiar universes. New films continue to arrive. But in a crowded subscription market, a known franchise has an immediate advantage: people already understand the characters and have a reason to click.

What to watch next

For movie fans, the final days of September are less about one single “must-see” release and more about choosing the format that fits the experience. A theatrical re-release like Endgame Encore is designed around the shared big-screen event. A streaming title like Toy Story 5 is built around convenience, repeat viewing and easy access at home.

October is expected to continue the mix, with more theatrical releases and streaming arrivals competing for attention. The practical takeaway is simple: check both the cinema calendar and your streaming libraries, because today's biggest releases can appear in very different places.
