Reported record spending on Steam suggests PC gaming demand remains strong despite rising hardware costs.

A record month for the platform

Tom’s Hardware reported that Steam generated an estimated $1.7 billion in September 2026, up 13% from the same month a year earlier. The report also put third-quarter revenue at about $5.5 billion. These are estimates rather than a public audited breakdown from Valve, but they point to a large and active PC gaming market.

New games can move the needle

The report highlights contributions from new intellectual property as well as established franchises. Big releases can create concentrated spending, while free-to-play games bring players back through seasonal content, cosmetics and battle passes. Platform revenue is shaped by more than full-price sales.

Hardware costs complicate the picture

Demand for games can remain healthy even when graphics cards, memory and storage become more expensive. Players may delay a PC upgrade while buying games during sales, playing older titles or adjusting settings to suit their current hardware.

What this means for players

A record platform month does not mean every game is a hit or every player is spending more. Revenue is concentrated across regions, genres and releases. Wishlists, seasonal sales and performance comparisons remain better tools than assuming a high-grossing title suits your taste.

The bigger picture

Steam’s reported performance reinforces PC gaming’s resilience and the importance of its broad catalogue. The next question is whether new releases can sustain attention beyond launch week and whether hardware prices allow more players to enter or upgrade.
